Leica M-D (Type 262) Coming

The rumors are building up surrounding a new camera, currently known as the Leica M-D (Type 262). It will be based on the existing Leica M (Type 262) including size and shape - sans the LCD screen on the back. Same sensor, brass top/bottom plates. The price is suggested to be higher, however - roughly $6,700 vs. $5,195 USD. It should be arriving at the beginning of May. We'll keep you posted!

We have additional word that it will be a cross between the M (Type 240) and M (Type 262)... Essentially it will be a Type 262; no video, live view, etc. especially because of the lack of an LCD - but will have the quieter shutter. However, like the Type 240 it will sport brass top and bottom plates.

Here's a screenshot of the registration with Korea's RRA:

The Leica M-D is the first production model of the digital M series without LCD display. On the back of the camera is the ISO dial - one of the few, but central functions instead. As the Leica M-D internalized all advantages of the Leica of rangefinder system, perfected over decades - not everything that is technically possible but deliberately. Radically reduced to the most important functions that are required - distance, aperture and ISO sensitivity - to take a picture, helps the user to concentrate on the essential: the photo. Like all digital M cameras it is fitted with a full-frame CMOS sensor, which is laid out for rangefinder photography and dispenses with video and live view.

The camera is now listed at Red Dot Cameras in the UK for £4,650.00.

The new Leica M-D (Typ 262) is a new M camera variation dedicated to the essence of M: Rangefinder photography. The purest form of the manual digital rangefinder

- Full mechanic control of all photographic functions thanks to the ISO speed dial

-24 MP-Still-CMOS sensor with Leica Maestro processor, ISO values of up to 6,400

In the case of the Leica M-D, the realisation of the purist concept consciously omits additional functions such as Live View or Video. All of which allow photographers to concentrate on what's essential: the subject. It concentrates attention entirely on composition. It consistently shifts the focus to the creative aspects of each subject - less technology for more creativity.

The purist design lacks a display and menu system, along with the Leica red dot logo and in keep with the classic M deisgn brings back the step on the top plate.

The official page is now live! LEICA M-D - A step back to the future

Leica - no other camera manufacturer is dedicated to focusing on 'Das Wesentliche' - the sheer essentials of photography. As a result, Leica has developed the Leica M-D: a camera that delivers photography in the most consistent way. A camera that offers no more and no less than the most important features, and represents a state-of-the-art digital rangefinder.

Photography in its purest form. Simplicity personified, photographers using the Leica M-D for the first time will instinctively and intuitively know how to use it. With the deliberate omission of anything but the essentials, the Leica M-D provides the greatest freedom to focus on creativity and capturing the decisive moment every time.
