The highly-custom, one-off Leica (RED) M (full details and images) by Apple's Jonathon Ive and Marc Newson sold for a staggering $1,805,000 USD at Sotheby's charity auction in New York (hammer price with buyer's premium)... Making it the most expensive camera ever sold (in German) - which was expected to be the Leica Luxus II also recently at auction (it failed to sell for the expected $1,615,700 USD, coming in at $626,947 USD instead). The camera was initially expected to reach $500,000 to $750,000 USD. When it was over, the (RED) auction at Sotheby's raised a total of $26.2M USD to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa. It makes this used one quite a bargain... ;)

You may recall that on Tuesday we brought you the story, Leica (RED) M Revealed! (which we've also updated) about the collaboration between Apple designer Sir Jonathan Ive and Marc Newson to produce the Leica (RED) M camera, set to auction on November 23, 2013 via Sotheby's. The pair have selected or made more than 40 objects for an auction to benefit Bono’s (of U2 fame) Product (RED) anti-H.I.V. campaign. Meeting with Newson and Ive, Paul Goldberger explores the shared obsession and philosophy behind everything from iPhones to jumbo-jet interiors in Vanity Fair's "Designing Men" article.

You may recall, about a year ago, shortly after the new M was announced - we ran a story about Apple designer Sir Jonathan Ive and Marc Newson working with Leica to produce a custom, one-off special edition camera. Well, the time has come for the promised (RED) auction to be done in collaboration with Bono (the lead singer of U2) and Marc Newson. The auction will be at Sotheby's in New York on November 23, 2013 - with the proceeds going towards Global Fund to help fight AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis. The auction is a followup to the 2008 (RED) auction that raised $40 million. Read more below for the flyer with details...

At Leica’s special event last night, after the new Leica M was announced - Dr. Andreas Kaufmann revealed that they’re planning a custom special edition version of the camera - to be designed by none other than Apple designer Sir Jonathan Ive. There will only be one made and auctioned off, with the proceeds going to charity.
