Major Leica S Camera Firmware Announced

Today, Leica has announced the most extensive firmware update since the release of the S-System, promising numerous tweaks and improving the performance of the camera and all Leica S lenses considerably. It includes an all-new autofocus algorithm that improves AF performance, providing significantly faster focusing and enabling greater precision. The update also includes all S lenses with an optimized AF motor control (including the new Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH also announced today). Added to this is improved object tracking with prediction in Continuous AF mode (Predictive AF). The GPS accuracy is also optimized. The S (Type 006) will get v2.4.0.0 and the S2/S2-P gets v1.4.0.0). New Leica Products at Photokina 2014?

That time is upon us once again - the biennial Photokina 2014 show in Cologne, Germany. We've already posted about the official Leica schedule of events... Now it's time to enter the murky area of new products we might see (as we did in 2012). Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH Coming

Leica will soon announce has announced the Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH lens for the S-System. Be sure to check out the sample images. The lens profile already exists in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.6. There will be a firmware update for the Leica S-System cameras forthcoming, bringing improved AF and support for this lens, to be released on September 16, 2014. The Leica S (Type 006) will get v2.4.0.0 and the S2/S2-P will see firmware v1.4.0.0 (vLLF016 is the latest). It's being reported on Photoscala as well. Leica Lens Price Increases

Leica just six months ago (on January 1, 2014) increased lens prices for many M lenses, but there's a new round of increases coming. This time for mostly S-System lenses, though one M lens and a couple of binoculars are also affected. The increase is effective July 1, 2014 - and dealers will honor the current prices until the end of the day on June 30, 2014 provided the items are currently in stock or available for immediate delivery by Leica Camera. If you pre-order the item before then, the price will be honored regardless of how long it takes to fulfill the order. Read more below for details!

4K Leica S-System at Photokina?

Our friend Dez gives us a tip that the expected Leica S update at Photokina might also include 4K video capability. We already expected the 40-50MP resolution bump in the move to a CMOS sensor... So adding live view and video capabilities makes a lot of sense, and nice to see that Leica is going for 4K right out of the gate. The real question lies in the lenses... Read more below.

Receive up to $5,000 USD instant credit towards a new Leica S (Type 006) Camera (regular cost $21,950 USD) via trade of your (film or digital) SLR or medium format camera. The offer is limited to one instant credit and only applies towards the purchase of a brand new camera from an authorized Leica USA dealer, store, or boutique. Effective April 1, 2014 through June 30, 2014.
