Portuguese Photography & 100 Years Leica

The site Público has a story, "Portuguese photography featured prominently in the exhibition celebrating 100 years of Leica" (in Portuguese). It talks about Portuguese photographers such as Gérard Castello-Lopes, Victor Palla, Varela Pécurto, Edward Harrington Sena, Sena da Silva and Fernando Taborda of the 1950s and 1960s - many of which shot with a Leica. Follow along as Hans-Michael Koetzle (pictured above) talks about some of the history involved. A rather interesting read! Read more below for translation!

Art Shay - Life Through a Leica

For nearly 70 years, Art Shay kept two things by his side: the love of his life, Florence, and a camera (that camera being a Leica)... Chicago Magazine gives us the story of Art Shay in "Life Through a Leica" saying, "Over his long career, the renowned photojournalist Art Shay, 91, has taken thousands of photographs of kings, presidents, Hollywood celebs, and sports stars—chronicling people’s lives and news stories all over the world for such magazines as Time, Life, and Chicago." But the real story here is about an exhibition featuring his favorite subject - his wife Florence of 67 years - who sadly passed away in August of 2012. Beginning on January 27 and running to May 24, 2014 at Columbia College Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography and Library (MoCP), be on the look out for "My Florence."

Elliott Erwitt - Scotland, People and Pups

A few days ago, we bemoaned the fact that the Elliott Erwitt event at the Leica Store Los Angeles was a bit overshadowed by the celebrities in attendance. We're here to correct that... Oversight. On Vanity Fair's site they're running a nice article called "Elliott Erwitt Shoots Scotland's Gorgeous Countryside, People, and Pups." Quite a nice slideshow of 31 photos and worth checking out.

Humans of New York

While not really a Leica story (he used a Canon EOS 7D with an EF 50mm f/1.2L lens), it's a pretty interesting project. First a little back story. In the summer of 2010, photographer Brandon Stanton set out on an ambitious project: to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City. Armed with his camera, he began crisscrossing the city, covering thousands of miles on foot, all in an attempt to capture New Yorkers and their stories. The result of these efforts was a vibrant blog with more than a million fans he called "Humans of New York" in which his photos were featured alongside quotes and anecdotes.

Humans of New York is the book inspired by the blog. With four hundred color photos, including exclusive portraits and all-new stories, Humans of New York is a stunning collection of images that showcases the outsized personalities of New York. Printed in a beautiful full-color, hardbound edition, in a distinctive vellum jacket.

Update (10/18/13): CNN has an interesting story on "The Photographer Behind 'Humans of New York'"
