Although I'm not in the market for another Leica M body (famous last words ;) ), I am intrigued by the notion of an M without an LCD screen, and with an electronic viewfinder. I'm not rooting for the demise of the optical rangefinder (heaven forbid! :o ), but I sure am curious about the next step in the M's evolution.

one worrying thing about the M60 though.. I remember reading somewhere you can't check battery level anywhere. Hopefully that'll be fixed in M-D. A M8 style top plate lcd would be great for that.

Might another potential problem be the ISO-setting wheel on the camera back? Unless the wheel is fitted with a setting lock or very firm detent, the ISO setting could be changed inadvertently when the camera is worn over the neck or shoulder.

All valid points! Also no cable release (granted, you can use the self timer).

But the real question remains... Why? It's a digital camera. If you want to go LCD-less, shoot film for crying out loud.

You may be right. Part of me still longs for the satisfying feel of the mechanical advance and the freedom from batteries and chargers and cords.

Tech is nice, but fleeting. Mechanical items are timeless, be they watches - or cameras.

Hmmm....a timeless watch? Sounds like a contradiction in terms. ;)

I once got in a discussion regarding the relative merits of mechanical versus electronic watches. My friend took the position that watches are (or should be) judged on accuracy above all other criteria, and therefore electronic watches are to be preferred. I argued that accuracy was critical in the days of celestial navigation, but that today the accuracy of a good mechanical watch is (or should be) sufficient. We went back and forth on those points, neither of us making a particularly compelling case. Then I recalled something I'd read years ago: I said that the curves and circular movement that characterize the mainspring and gears of a mechanical watch echo - in microcosm - the movement of the earth and the moon, and thus are a truer and more fitting means to tell time. I argued that an electronic watch tells time in jagged increments rather than the continuum in which life is actually lived.

I was feeling pretty good about my position, when my friend countered that while my view is valid in classical physics, life really isn't lived in a continuum. He threw quantum physics at me, asserting that at the atomic and sub-atomic level, life is indeed lived in increments.

This left me in a state of uncertainty from which I have not yet emerged. :? However, I still prefer mechanical watches, because...because....well, just because. I think I can still say the same about mechanical M cameras.

Well, I prefer mechanical watches as well and it has nothing to do with accuracy. But I like the idea of having a watch that in theory outlasts myself. If it breaks, it can be repaires. It never runs out of battery. I like to look at it thinking what a beautiful machine it is. And though my Certina diver is mass produced, it still somehow pays respect to the profession where these clocks were still hand made.

So, it's purely "sentimental crap" and emotional thing - but it's my sentimental crap! :-)

I don't get the same feeling from a quartz watch, no matter how nice it is.

I'm turning 40 late this year and as a present to myself, I'm thinking of rewarding myself with a nice new mechanical watch. If I can make the funds available, I'd like to have one of those Omega master chronos.. what a concept.
