Stumbling thru the shop looking for something else.......there she was.
A lovely 9 centimeter Elmar f/4 from circa 1957. Pristine leather. No bang marks. Beautiful glass. In the bubble case. When my friendly sales person, with whom I have a history, showed it to me I looked at it a while and gave it a quick inspection. He asked if I was interested and when I made a face he said "let's bargain for a sale".

A fast 200 and we were out the door........

2012 minus 1957 equals .....holy smokes ..... 55 years give or take.

I am slightly older than this lens and I wish I was in as good shape.

Samples in a couple of days but on a few quick snaps I am greatly impressed.

Nice! Looks like a real beauty both as a lens and the results. $200 sounds like a pretty good deal, too. Congrats!

Thanks!

Buying a Leica Lens with an amount of money with no commas in it is a culture shock.

Hi JDLaing,
Do you have any other photo to show us with your elmar? Have you tried in portraits?
May be elmar 90:4 will be my only tele, also if hektor 73:1,9 is certainly more fascinating (but too expensive)

Thanks,

Antonio

JD, this is the lens I recently obtained and want to thank you for this thread. Have not shot with mine yet so that is helpful.. Maybe we can get some more posted?

I admit, I've not shot this lens too often because I have always had modern 90s and don't shoot the focal length enough to justify using anything except the glass I spent thousands on.

Here is the lens sample page:

Here is a review comparison I did between this lens and the new version (the Macro Elmar):

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your answer.
My only two M lenses are a summicron 50 and a color skopar 28/3,5 (in fact my viewfinder is a 0,58x). So, I understand your rare use of 90.
The only purpose for me for having a 90 mm would be portraiture.

Antonio

In that case the lower contrast of one of the Elmar lenses, would be perfectly suited for portraiture. There are a few from different eras, the earliest of them (from the 1931-1965) can be found for under $100 like the one I have and under $300 for the collapsible one. The 3 element version from 1964-1968 is a great lens but expensive on the collectible level (maybe $800 for a decent one). The Elmar C (1973-1978) is another great version and should be about $250. And the macro Elmar is as good as a modern lens get, though the price is an indicator of that.

What I'm getting at, is that if you don't need the speed, then over the years the Elmar 90s have been as good as anything...especially when price is a consideration.
