So here are the R lenses that will be going up in price - now that the new M can use them... ;)

Technically, all R lenses are compatible - they just won't all have profiles in-camera.

Attached via the R-Adapter M these are the lenses that will have in-camera profiles:

  • Super-Elmarit-R 15 mm f/2.8
  • Elmarit-R 19 mm f/2.8
  • Elmarit-R 28 mm f/2.8
  • Summilux-R 35 mm f/1.4
  • Summicron-R 35 mm f/2
  • Summicron-R 50 mm f/2
  • Summilux-R 50 mm f/1.4
  • Macro-Elmarit-R 60 mm f/2.8
  • Summilux-R 80 mm f/1.4
  • Summicron-R 90 mm f/2
  • Apo-Macro-Elmarit-R 100 mm f/2.8
  • Apo-Telyt-R 180 mm f/3.4
  • Apo-Elmarit-R 180 mm f/2.8
  • Apo-Summicron-R 180 mm f/2
  • Apo-Telyt-R 280 mm f/4
  • Vario-Elmar-R 21-35 mm f/3.5-4
  • Vario-Elmar-R 28-70 mm f/3.5-4.5
  • Vario-Elmar-R 35-70 mm f/4
  • Vario-Elmarit-R 28-90 mm f/2.8-4.5
  • Vario-Apo-Elmarit-R 70-180 mm f/2.8
  • Vario-Elmar-R 80-200 mm f/4

Fortunately for the sellers and unfortunately for the buyers, this list is comprised of the R lenses that where already pretty expensive compared to new Canikon glass

Three of my seven R lenses are on that list. One more I can fake. I hope that a lack of code won't affect things too much. Getting this camera will also mean that I have to code my M-glass.

In a recent interview with Stefan Daniel, it sounds like the new sensor might diminish the need for coding. Though it must still be necessary to some degree (for vignetting at least) as the 6-bit sensor is there on the lens mount, albeit more rounded - and of course, all the profiles available in-camera now for both M and R lenses.

I did a little more research and it turns out that the corrections for R lenses are pretty minimal indeed (as if those listed really needed much anyway). So no worries there.

The R-Adapter M will trigger the R lens selections in the menu, which have to be set manually for each lens you mount. While it will remember your last setting, if you change R lenses you'll have to select a new setting in the menu as there's no coding or other signal happening.

FYI, that's a pricey combo in that picture! So don't get *too* excited:

Leica M body - $6,950 (plus tax and any shipping)
Vario-APO-Elmarit-R 70-180mm f/2.8 - $5,000 (used via eBay currently)
EVF2, Multifunction Handgrip M and Finger Loop - $1,000 (roughly, at least)
TOTAL - $12,950+

...and you thought M lens names were a mouthful! :D

Thanks for the list, my R-glass selection it's not as high class, but I understand that the list of selected lens names will be longer and go more further in the past.

Lucky ones that have retained those lens!

All of that is assuming that your R lens has the contacts on the cam lock!!

Hopefully I'll get an M eventually!

However, as I've only got one of the R lenses on the list (Vario Elmar-R 28-70) I'm not to sure how important it will be to get the Leica R to M adaptor at several hundred dollars/pounds or to get a Chinese copy at a few tens of dollars/pounds (I'll probably also get the Olympus version of the EVF2 as this is half the price of the Leica branded version). The 6 bit coding as has been stated only switches on the additional R lens menu. Selecting the appropriate lens applies the firmware adjustments. As most of my lenses are telephotos then any corrections are probably minimal and I wonder how effective the in camera corrections are compared to the software corrections in Lightroom, which are already available. My experience with 6 bit M lenses is that when applying LR profiles there is an instant visible shift so does that mean that the actual in camera corrections aren't doing a lot or is LR over compensating? OK you get the lens in the EXIF but if you don't have any on the list then it's no big deal, my current workflow already requires me to edit this with EXIF Editor so there is no big change for me.

My hope/expectation will be (and I'm sure this will happen) that Leica will start to offer M lenses at lengths greater than 135mm (as the rangefinder limitation no longer applies) these can be 6 bit coded directly and won't require any additional manual selection.

Start saving now guys as I'm sure Leica have just opened up a whole new box of GAS

I wonder how much better the Leica R to M adapter will be than the Novoflex R to M adapter. The Leica version is only $40 more, but the Novoflex is already widely available, and Novoflex is the king of adapters. The leica will come in handy if your R lenses have contacts and you need EXIF info, but for me, dropping $2k more on the same lens because its the newer body configuration (with contacts) just isn't in the books.

And I, like you Bob, would love to see some modern APO corrected tele ASPH M lenses. Many will say that it goes against what leica stands for (priding themselves that any RF lens made from 1929-present can be used on an M camera flawlessly), but I don't think Leica is the same Leica these days, they much prefer to pride themselves on profits ;)
