From an old poster/album cover, I use Paint Shop Pro v6 (ca. 1998) and its clone feature, not for image object replacement, but mainly to repair damage and reduce unwanted clutter.

A fairly minor advantage with so many disadvantages and downsides I can't even list them.

I support the idea of using Photoshop to restore old photos. Perhaps, this program is the best one to do it. But it's also difficult in use. If it still can help someone, here's an article https://damagedphotorestoration.com/blog/photo-restoration-facts/how-to-repair-old-photos-in-photoshop.html describing the process of repairing.
By the way, i'll be glad to answer some questions concerning restoring the photos
Good luck
Jack :)
