Nikon has just dropped the bomb on Canon... Big time.

As a Canon SLR/DSLR shooter (with a sizable investment in L lenses), I have to say... The new Nikon D800/D800E bodies look insane! I'm especially digging the D800E, which differs from the D800 only in that it "cancels" the anti-aliasing (AA) filter to achieve sharper images with their shared 36MP sensors - much like our M8/M9 cameras do. If you want more megapixels, you'll have to shoot MF.

I've been waiting for the Canon 1Ds "Mark IV" basically for YEARS. The Mark III did nothing for me (due mostly to various AF issues, etc.) and as a 1D (Mark IIn) shooter, using a "prosumer" body like the 5D/5D Mark II just wasn't happening. Canon dragged on for all these years and announced the 1D X not that long ago. Seriously? It's a nice camera, but lacks serious pixel power (it's 18MP with an AA filter). Not that there's anything wrong with 18MP mind you; I find the M9 files to be perfectly fine. But not what I expect from Canon's high-end body.

Canon really needs to get on the ball here and release a decent pro and prosumer body. The 5D so far has been too dumbed down... A "3D" would be nice. There are rumors "something" is coming, but it had better be a knock-out... Or there might just be a lot of Canon gear for sale in the classifieds soon.

An interesting read over on Rob Van Petten's site about the D800.
