For me...I am always polite and get what I want photographically. Just the way I was brought up by my parents, mentors, teachers, etc. A little sweet honey catches more flies any day.

Polite.
It's my nature.

I'm not a big street shooter, but when I do - I'm a ninja. I either use the camera normally or from the hip.

Ninja Negative or Double Ninja? :D Could be a good video!

One thing to keep in mind is that each approach gives different results in your images. If you're "polite" then it means you've already made a connection to your subject and even exchanged glances, a nod or a smile. So you're subject is aware of the photo and might change their mannerisms.

On the other hand, if you're "rude" then you'll get an appropriate response, whatever that may be.

Then you have the more discreet, or "ninja style" where you try to minimize your subject's awareness that a photo is/was/will be taken - catching them "in their element" so to say.

In the time photography has been a hobby (about 2 years now) I've only had opportunity to be polite, trying to be as stealth as possible. luckily I've not yet had any confrontations, I fear I would not be so polite if the situation so dictated

^ Same here more or less... I think if provoked though, I'd be a sonofabitch. :P

Never had a problem except with a security guard at a local mall and he was not the sharpest knife in the drawer so I didn't push it with him as I had already gotten my photos.

I do wonder what would happen if I were pushed over the top, though. Most likely I would be laid back but it would really depend on the circumstances. Hopefully it never happens.
