Spent some time today tweaking a bunch of vacation photos. We had a nex-5, M9 and X2 with us.

There were a couple of things quite evident when doing so:

1) camera comparison was cruel. I felt sorry for the nex, it was so far behind that it wasn't even funny

2) using Apple Aperture, the raw converters default settings are crap. What's going on with the "boost" setting. It's almost like automagic way of blowing highlights.

3) the nex needs to go :-) the gap is just too much.. but what to get as replacement?? Wish someone would make the X2 with 24-90 VR and maybe movie. Leave the rest alone.. alas no such dream compact exists. Small camera, large sensor, midrange zoom, Leica simplicity and oh yea lens should be quite fast too..

4) I love my 90 elmarit-m :-)

Dr. Kaufman hinted at some new Leica products in his recent interview, and with cell phone cameras eating the low end of the digicam market, I think Kaufman senses an opportunity to increase his penetration into the upper end of that market. Maybe with just the camera you describe. Because I want one too.

It does make some sense, as even Zeiss is involved in smartphone cameras. At least Leica can represent their optical side here...

Does the new X-Vario satisfy the desire?

It might, but in early spring there was no such thing :-) That message was written in april..

Still, to be a nitpicker the vario has shorter than 90mm lens and no real vr. Also I don't have the budget for vario so can't say wether it'd suffice in practise.
