So we're building up quite a repertoire of digital M bodies and variants these days... In an effort to keep them straight, here's a run down of what they are (by their common names/abbreviations both official and unofficial).

M8 (2006-2009)

  • M8 - Original M8 as released in 2006
  • M8.2 - The second version from 2008
  • M8u - An Upgraded M8 (with various M8.2 features)

M9 (2009-)

  • M9 - Original M9 as released in 2009
  • M9-P - More MP/traditionally styled M9 released in 2011
  • M-E - M9 w/Anthracite Grey paint, minus USB/frame lever released in 2012
  • M9 Ti - M9 Titanium (limited edition) released in 2010

M (M10)

  • M - Original M (aka M10) released in 2013 (announced in 2012)

M Monochrom (2013-)

  • MM - Original M Monochrom released in 2012

Finishes

  • Chrome (silver)
  • Black Chrome
  • Black Paint
  • Steel Grey (light)
  • Anthracite Grey (dark)

For a fully illustrated timeline of all M bodies (not just digital) be sure to check out our Overview of the M System article.

Anthracite is a beautiful finish - I still regret not getting the anthracite MP back in the days of your when it was available as a new camera.

It is quite a unique color. Too bad it's not offered on a la carte.

I think there were also special edition M8/9's which were white. And then also the Hermes? edition, which had exterior changes.. different styled top cover etc. Could qualify as it's own model, because it had more changes on it than most M8u's?
