A lens that doesn't receive much love...

Great portrait, DEZ!
What camera body did you use? How does the 75mm work in terms of frame lines?

Fantastic shot! Love the flare, too. Definitely an understated lens.

I've added this new thread to the lens sample photo index!

This was with the M9. The frame lines can be annoying, because your eye is automatically drawn to the 50mm frame lines, instead of the little hash marks for the 75. You do get used to it in time.

It's funny, you look at the frame lines and it doesn't seem like a big difference in angle of view, but if you shoot 50 and 75 in the same day, you realize it's actually a pretty big difference.

I've been thinking that when I can afford it I'd like to add a telephoto lens to my kit, and I was thinking about the Summicron-M 90MM APO, but it looks like I should "test drive" the 75mm as well. That is, if the stock market doesn't keep nose-diving!

Yeah, the stock market is definitely causing some concern in my household as well. If you're interested in the 90 APO, I would definitely take a look at the discontinued 90mm Elmarti-M f/2.8. It's a fantastic lens, very sharp, nice neutral look to it and it's generally quite flattering for portraits when compared to the 75 & 90 APO lenses. It's also considerably cheaper! The 90 APO is a bit of a beast, size and weight wise and is obviously much more expensive.
But that's just my 2¢.

I can't praise the Elmarit-M 90mm f/2.8 enough... Seriously a shame it was discontinued. The new Summarit is no comparison. I've thought about the APO numerous times, because, well - an extra stop and officially APO. But yeah, it's a beast! And not *that* much better in the grand scheme of things.

Another alternative to the excellent Elmarit-M 90mm f/2.8 is its older sibling, the Tele-Elmarit 90mm f/2.8. It is probably the smallest telephoto lens Leica has ever made (easily fits in your pocket), but it is an incredible lens - not quite as sharp as these other Leicas, but it renders wonderful colors with lots of contrast. It's a Mandler lens where some were made in Canada, the rest in Germany (the latter being harder to find). They are a real bargain if you locate a well maintained one. Here is a good review with some sample images:

http://joerivanderkloet.com/the-leica-9 ... ood-price/

He also has a review of the Summarit 75mm on his site.

James - I said there was a review of the Summarit 75mm, but meant to say Summicron 75mm. By now I should have these name straight even if I can't afford them!
