I recently sold my 50 (Jupiter 8) because I never used it since getting a 35 (Nokton Classic). I love most things about the Nokton but not the distortion so I'm getting a Summilux pre-asph :)

I almost sold my CV 21/4 to make up for the Summilux purchase but I changed my mind and am keeping it. It's an amazingly fun lens!

Would love to get something longer in the future as well, but I'm quite satisfied with a 35 for most of my shooting.

Only have two lenses for now, but they work wonderfully with the M8

1 - 28mm Summicron ASPH
2 - 50mm Summilux ASPH

The 28 is on the camera 80% of the time. It is simply a brilliant lens - great optics yet clear Leica character when wide open.

The third lens would be something wide - the new 21 looks superb but I'm wondering if 18mm is the focal length I need to really differentiate it from the 28 I already have.

The 18mm SE is a wonderful lens and probably the right focal length if you're a 28mm shooter

You're probably right. To me, and ultra-wide needs to have obvious perspective distortion - to add 'drama' and 'pop'. I have not seen 21mm photos with this character, there are however plenty of dramatic Tri-E 16mm photos like this. I'm undecided if the 18mm SE has the distortion I am looking for.

I played around with the Tri-E 16-18-21 at a Leica workshop:

Ignore the over-saturated colors...

I had the opportunity to try the SE 18 at an Akademie event and it was really dramatic, but not much distortion. Something more up your alley might be Zeiss ZM 18mm or even a Voigtlander 15mm

From the menagerie I usually choose

CV 28/3.5 tiny and top quality
Summarit 50/2.5 compact, great handling, reminds me of the v1 summicron 35mm in feel
APO-Telyt 135mm wonderful lens

Most of the time I just carry the 50 and 135 on a pair of M3 bodies. Easy to get sharp focus with the 135 even wide open with the M3's.

I'm as happy as a clam at high tide with the two lenses I already have:
Summicron 35mm ASPH, and
Summicron 50mm (version IV).
I've been hankering after a longer lens for portraits, so if the market ever quits "correcting" I'd test-drive the Summicron 75mm APO and Summicron 90mm APO. Based on comments and photographs posted on LVL, I think it would be a tough choice. :?

I realize the 90mm might be contrary for my preference for compact, light lenses and a narrow range of focal lengths for more subtle changes in perspective. However, I have plan to use the longer lens for reference photographs to use in portrait painting. I would use it with a tripod and ample lighting, and I want razor-sharp detail at the subjects eyes and undistorted perspective (ie. no "flattening") of the head and facial features.

If I could add a fourth lens, it might be the Summicron 28mm ASPH.

As a new to Leica M user, my favorite 3 lens set was the one I started out with, which were also my only M mounts lenses:
CV21mm f/4 Skopar;
Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Planar; &
Leica 90mm f/2.8 Tele-Elmarit
(I brought these with me when I recently transitioned from Fuji X.)

But I just got a Leica Summarit 35mm f/2.5 that is absolutely wonderful in every respect, excepting maybe very low light, but even there it is not too shabby if I work it right. And since putting it on the camera, only the Leica 90mm has ever taken its place; so maybe it has taken the place of my Zeiss 50mm as a favorite. But I have to admit that with my Fuji X-Pro1, my cropped sensor XF14mm & Xf35mm were my two very favorite focal lengths, so I think I need to spend more time with the equivalent Zeiss 50mm back on the M, along with the equivalent CV21mm.

Your 3 lens original set is exactly the same as mine on the M. On Q I have 28-35-50 ;-)
