I had the chance to try this lens and noticed that the focus ring was smooth when it was in motion, but was a little sticky from any starting position. This caused the ring to "jump" when I started to turn it, potentially moving it beyond a desired focus position. I'm wondering if this is normal behavior for this lens. My 50mm Summicron and 135mm Tele-Elmar exhibit no such behavior, but they are both slightly older lenses. Both of them move smoothly regardless of the amount of force I apply to the focus ring. Thanks for any feedback.

No, not normal. I had this lens in black as well as chrom and neither had sticky focus.

You may experience sticky focus with the FLE lenses like the 75/2APO - but even those become smooth with sufficient usage .

If you can live with the extra weight, for my taste and from my experience, the chrom/titanium lenses lend a better tactile experience than the usual black copies. They cost a few €£¥$ extra but well worth it.

Send it in for CLA & 6-bit coding.

It's a fantastic lens. I sold mine to facilitate M upgrade. A mistake I've been regretting ever since.

Thanks for your replies. I suspected it wasn't normal behavior, given the rave reviews and my experience with other M lenses. It wasn't as described in the auction otherwise, so I returned it to the vendor. Looking forward to finding a good copy someday.

Konica hexanon-m 90/2.8 is almost identical and roughly 50% of the price. Some differences can be measured, but in all practical uses - no way to tell the difference in IQ.

No problems with mine either that I picked up second hand for a sensible price in the UK including 12 months warranty.

I'll take a look at the Konica, thanks for the suggestion. Although, I'm pretty hooked on the rendering of Leica lenses so that Elmarit is what will probably end up on the front of my M8. Cheers.

There's been some speculation that they actually share same optical formula and the differences are in coatings.

I think the biggest difference is slightly higher contrast on the hexanon.
