Post subject:  Alex and Rebecca Norris Webb, "Memory City"

Memory City is the Webbs' tender valediction to Kodachrome film and to the city and people of Rochester, New York in the waning days of Kodak. Alex Webb had built his photographic career over 30 years almost exclusively with Kodachrome when it's color development ceased in 2009. In a poetic arrangement of color and monochrome images, interleaved with fold-out pages, facsimiles of hand-written notes, a fold out chronology of Rochester and Eastman Kodak, and a booklet entitled "Notes on Film and Memory" stored in a pocket at the back of the hardcover book, the Webbs explore the nature of memory through images of a place dedicated for more than a century to the art and technology of preserving memories. When Kodak's business dwindled away with the rise of digital photography and image storage, the economic loss to Rochester was profound, as though the city had lost it's reason for being.
In Memory City the Webbs evoke the city that was, through images of the city as they experienced it in the first years of this century, though words and pictures and book design. Memory City was published in 2014 by Radius Books.
