I've had the new Leica Q for almost a month now, including a two week vacation trip that was mostly about family visiting & not travel photography. So I am still really getting used to it. Yesterday was the first try at using it on the street, & I thought I might experiment a bit using AF rather than a fixed manual focus. Also realized that with AF, I could also shoot with the camera away from my eye, hanging mid waist on its strap. But I really wanted to see how the 28mm lens would work for this type of photography. And I ended up with some OK results, & liked the wide lens result with most of them, but did end up resizing some to a 1:1 format for better subject isolation. Here are a few with the 28mm capture.

And here are 3 more street images that I took with my new Q with the one by one resizing. Also I can't figure out how to post more than 3 images which the system limits me to even though I see other posts with more than 3. Anyway, here are the next 3:

Besides the street photos taken in downtown Palm Springs, the city boasts some "Modernism Architecture" that makes for an interesting application for the Q's wide angle lens as well. Here are a few examples of what I saw.

Congratulations on your new Q, Jed! You are really diving into street photography with it, and it looks like you are off to a terrific (re-)start. I particularly like the shot where it looks as though another pedestrian is simultaneously photographing your subject with an IPhone. Also, the juxtaposition of Palm Spring's spare modernist architecture with natural forms of ocotillo and agave is visually appealing.

Are you finding that the Q works better for you than the M?

Jim-many thanks for your encouraging words. The street work with this camera I think will be more manageable mechanically but not much so compositionly. The optical view finder with the M is what I miss the most, but the Q offers up an awful lot to take its place. The lens, the interface, & the joy of it in my hand are all quite special. But still a challenge as well as a new experience on the street. Also the case with architecture photos where you have to do it all with only one lens & no tilt shift or other help.

But so far I can't really say it is working better for me than my M. Certainly so in terms of focusing issues due to my eye problems. But the fixed focal length is really challenging me to see things more clearly before I bring the Q up before my eyes, & also to move around a lot more physically to get in the right spot for what I want in the EVF. But I have no regrets & am looking forward to the Q as my go to body & lens. It certainly is sweet to hold & carry around all day!

Hey Jed:
I don't know if you get the e-advertisements from Leica Store Miami, but they are advertising a two-day "boot camp" for Leica Q owners, Sept. 17-18, 2016 in Miami. Fee is $349. Details and sign-up at http://www.leicastoremiami.com. According to their advertisement:
Quote:
If you own a Leica Q, you’re most likely aware of its incredible image quality and diverse feature set, but might not feel you are taking full advantage of all it has to offer. Leica Store Miami is excited to introduce the Leica Q Owner’s Boot Camp: a two-day intensive workshop designed to cover the Q from top to bottom. The workshop, which will be run September 17-18, 2016, includes instructional classroom time with Leica Specialist Josh Lehrer and a morning of photography in Miami Beach.

We will go over the entire menu in detail along with every button and switch on the camera. You will learn how to set up the Q for your preferred style of shooting, and all of our favorite tips and tricks will be shared including the best way to work with Wi-Fi and a full overview of the Q accessories lineup. From the ideal focus settings, to shooting in manual, working with flash and updating firmware, there is a lot you will master as a participant in the Leica Q Boot Camp.

This workshop is primarily geared towards Q owners, however anyone interested in a comprehensive overview of the camera is welcome to join us. A very limited supply of loaner Q cameras will be on hand. As this is a weekend workshop, we will also be covering some Lightroom post-processing techniques to get the most from the Q files.

Here's the itinerary:
Quote:
Saturday, September 17
9am-10am: Breakfast and meet & greet at Leica Store Miami
10am-12:30pm: Classroom: Introduction to the Leica Q and menu overview
12:30-1:30pm: Group lunch (included in workshop fee)
1:30-5:30pm: Classroom: Custom settings, shooting in manual, Wi-Fi, and more (with various breaks and hands-on time interspersed)
Sunday, September 18
9am-Noon: Photography outing in South Beach
Noon-1pm: Group lunch (included in workshop fee)
1:30pm-5:30pm: Classroom: Q&A, Lightroom techniques, accessories & bags overview (with various breaks and hands-on time interspersed)
Please note this schedule may change slightly, but the start and end times are set.

Although our surnames are spelled the same, I am not related to Josh Lehrer (as far as I know). However, I am related to the Art Deco Moderne (Streamline) architect - Henry Hohauser - who designed many of the classic buildings in South Beach. He was my uncle. 8-)

Jed, I understand if you do not immediately book a ticket to Miami-Dade, but I will show this to the folks at Leica Store LA as evidence that there really is interest in some kind of program on the Q.

Thanks Jim; that looks like a great program, but unfortunately on the wrong coast! Not that I wouldn't mind a trip to Miami Beach, particularly since the weather is becoming a bit too toasty too early here in the CA desert - supposed to be 112ºF today. When I was working I spent a fair amount of time in Miami, but unfortunately I was always attached to a briefcase rather than a camera bag. Great location for architectural & street photography, or just plain travel photos. So again my appreciation both for calling it to my attention & bringing it to the attention of the LA Leica folks. With its even greater population, LA might even be a better location for a Q program.

Nicely done! I especially like the third one.

Having AF and being able to shoot from the hip is a wonderful thing to have. Sure, one can scale focus... But that typically requires both practice and a deeper DoF than you might normally want (I like to shoot closer to wide open than not).

Thanks & agree that the AF opens up many possibilities with the Q. I have been setting it for Single Point & haven't really tried the Multi Point. So far, so good without any real problems of focusing on the background, even when shooting from the hip. The Leica App also opens up the possibility of using my iPhone to frame & trigger the shutter release with the Q hanging at waist level. I've set it up, experimented a bit, & may try that next on the street.
