How much heavier is the silver compared with the black, already beastly & cumbersome?

It's the same, thankfully its silver anodised aluminium and not the chromed brass used in earlier silver lenses! I noticed the new silver 35 cron is the same, so looks like Leica are shifting away from brass lens bodies altogether?

No, brass is here to stay (for now). I suspect they opted to use aluminum on the Noctilux because it's already such a beast - and perhaps because of the properties of the metals; some parts are rather thin (e.g. focus ring). They've had issues with this in other lenses like the Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 ASPH, though that was going from stainless to aluminum, IIRC.

You got that right. Some of those focus rings were downright fragile.

Oh yeah - if you grip the Noctilux tightly, you can feel the focus tighten up. Heh. Still wouldn't trade it for anything!
