Is anyone using the Zeiss zm25 on the M240? If so, how's it working out?

Currently on the look for a wide..

I've only used the Zeiss Biogon 2,8/25 ZM on the M8, M9 and Fujifilm X-T1 - it truly shines, so I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The focal length is a bit of an oddity, though live view goes a long way.

Have you also considered the Voigtländer 21mm f/1.8 Ultron lens? Superior build to the ZM and also a really nice performer. Plus it's faster. But it is a bit larger and weighs more. The hood is integrated and non-removable, unlike the (extra cost) Zeiss hood.

That's an option as well. The Zeiss costa about half the price of the voigtländer, so even adding the hood it'll be cheaper. But price isn't really the deciding factor.. nor the size/weight. They're all small enough anyway..

How I came to think abou the 25 is that it's sort of half way between 21 and 28. I did also think about 35's but figured I just might expand my horizon a bit..

Of the 28's there's also a nice 28 elmarit version 3 available at local stealers.. being Mandler design that intriques me as well.

Of these wides, the 28 would be easiest and 21 would have the most effect but also hardest.

So how does a 25 handle? Jack of all trades, master of none?

I'd consider the long-term effect of build quality with the ZM as well. Supposedly fixed in newer versions, but consider "the wobble." Especially if buying used.

The 28mm focal length is nice if you have a 50. Much wider than a 35 - enough to be a different experience. A 21 is again a different experience entirely. Between the three, a very nice spread. The wider you go, the more dramatic every 1mm in focal length is.

I never shot with a 28mm on the Ms until I picked up the Cron, and before I knew it, it became one of my favorite focal lengths. You can shoot all day with it. A nice feature is that the framelines are comfortable to work with and easy to see. Of course, you can just use the whole VF with the 25. Somewhat inaccurate, but close enough.

With a 21, you really want a dedicated external VF (or EVF) for best use. Something to consider. But there's something about having such an ultra-wide. It's a whole lot of fun, and great for street if you're the type to get in there with your subjects. The DoF alone makes for a snapshot camera when set to hyperfocal. Unlike a 28, it's not an all-day shooter.

The 25 is... Yes, a bit in between. Optically, it's the best ZM (though they're all really good, especially the Planar). Not as obvious a wide as the 21, but a bit more dramatic than a 28.

Finally, there's the issue of coding. You'll need to deal with it, either temporarily or permanently. So keep that in mind also.

This might help:

DN: could you move this thread to a more suitable section than Zeiss? The discussion sort of wandered off the original topic. So I edited the topic to more suitable one already, now just need to move it elsewhere :)

On the subject then, I've almost made my mind. Looks like I'm going for a 28mm f2 ultron.. I wasn't really thinking about it, but now I've found a great deal locally for a 2nd hand one. The guy's asking only 330€ for it, so around 450usd. For that price, I'm ready to play ball and give it a good fighting chance!

Sure - moving now...

That Ultron is a nice lens. Very capable. Minor focus shift. I almost went for one mself; ended up with the 28 Cron.

WEll, now that my M240 is back I finally had the chance to try the Ultron a bit. I hand coded it to 28/2 Summicron with a black sharpie. Coding seems to work fine.

Here is the first photo with the lens coded..

Shot wide open and around 1000 ISO.

Have to see about the results when I get back home, but touring Europe tha past weeks this 28mm has been my body cap on the 240. 50mm seems almost useless as the interesting things are big & close. A 21mm might have been interesting as well :-)

I use the WATE - 16/18/21 and wouldn't be without it when I want a wide angle.
