I know I'm being overly sensitive, but it really bugs me when I tell someone I'm "into photography," or show someone what I think is really nice work, and the response is something along the lines of "that's a good hobby."

I don't want to be a snob, but I kind if feel like it's waaaaay more than a hobby. A passion. A pursuit. But not something I tinker with. It's part of my identity.

I know I shouldn't let it get under my skin but for some reason it just does.

I can understand where you're coming from. It devalues the time, effort and creativeness you put into shooting by calling it simply, "a hobby." You're right, it suggests something you just do flippantly, casually. I haven't gotten that, at least that I recall.

How about when they say, "Oooh, I took a great shot the other day... With my phone!" And worse, show it to you. :p

Or when they say:"Oh, you must have a great camera".

I don't like it when a stranger asks me that, but I resent it when I'm not consulted by a friend or relative when they have no knowledge base (the guy at best buy just doesn't have a clue)

That friend & relative thing is a 2-bladed sword. I'm in double trouble reg. that, since I work in IT. When ever any relative/friend has any trouble with anything from fridge to car radio, including cameras I get the call - since:"Juha can fix it in a split second". And the worst part is when they start referring their friends to call me..

I tell you, it was getting out of hand. A couple of years ago I just made a decision to stop helping most of them. I just turned them away saying I haven't done this in a long time and frankly don't have a clue.. now I've managed to narrow it down to extended family only, which is ok'ish. Now only about 5-6 people and their "electronics" to take care of. Luckily I have a say in what they buy, so it's not aleays the cheapest crap :-)

And sorry for the bit of OT. Now back to you..

Juba, that is exactly why I keep a low profile. I got tired of shooting for free. So everybody now is loaded up with as many point and shoot, DSLRs, and phone cameras...actually more of those than I have film and digital cameras combined. And that is amazing.

Haha. Well that sounds like a pain, I do not envy those calls...
