I want to get the best b&w images (for printing) out of an M8, but I am unsure of the best way to achieve this, so... :?:

Do I shoot in colour (with UV/IR filters in place) converting in SEP2, or in-camera monochrome with or without said filters?

Current Lens lineup: 28mm ASPH 'Elmarit' and 50mm 'Summicron'.

Target subjects: Land and seascapes + street scenes.

Many thanks in anticipation of some guidance in this regard.

With an M8, some like to omit the UV/IR filter if the final destination is B&W. For starters, colorations won't affect your image (e.g. magenta blacks) and the extra sensitivity into the IR is said to give a little "extra" to the image. Also less chance of flare, ghosts, etc. from the filter.

I would shoot DNG and do all of your processing in post using SEP2. This gives you the most control and you can change your settings later on if you'd like.

You can also shoot DNG+JPEG with B&W set; which will give you the DNG for post but display a B&W JPEG image on the rear LCD. This gives you a more accurate preview and you'll have an already-processed photo, ready to go. The internal B&W JPEGs are actually pretty good! I like mine with extra contrast and higher ISO for grit. Save this setting to a user profile for quick access. Makes for a "poor man's Monochrom."
