I've had Linux* on the brain a lot lately, which reminded me of the variety of penguin shots I've taken over the years... Apparently, I've got a few! And I have more. :o

* The Linux mascot is "Tux" the penguin.

These are from the Allwetter Zoo, in Münster Germany in 2011.

These are the non-Leica shots, from the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. Trip II in 2009.

Very nice Michael, the one swimming above water is great. Who said an RF is inadequate for wildlife shots--as long as the wildlife is in captivity or at least unaffraid of people :D

Thanks, Alex! So true, LOL!

But, err, that shot of the penguin swimming was shot with the Canon 1D Mark IIn DSLR...

Sometimes the lil' beasties are too fast or the light is too low. Sometimes, you have both... In which case, pre-focusing is the best you can hope for, with as much DoF as you can muster with a reasonable shutter speed:

I know. I should have separated that a a different paragraph.

And it's probably just the contrast and your post processing, but the IQ of the M9 and the Elmarit looks significantly better than the Canon...I just like that shot :)

I wasn't quite sure... Hehe. :p

Funny you should mention the look and IQ. The Canon is 8.2MP while the M9 is 18MP... But even with the M8 and its 10.3MP sensor you can notice a (similar) difference and across most images. My PP treatment has evolved a bit, but it's still basically the same. I set both cameras to deliver flat images, preferring to tweak during import and PP. I chalk it up to several things:

  • Evolution of ACR (Canon on older versions, Leica the latest)
  • Lack of an AA filter on the Leica bodies
  • CCD vs. CMOS, perhaps? ;)
  • Leica prime vs. Canon zoom

The Canon images aren't as saturated, contrasty. They lack that "pop." I'm going to try running some Canon shots through the latest version of ACR. I think that might have a lot to do with it and it's easy enough to test. It'll give the Canon shot the same PP "recipe" as well, for a more even comparison.

If anyone's interested - here are the three full galleries that these images came from:

Interesting. I guess when the difference is that significant on paper then it can be clearly evident even with small jpgs on an iPad screen
