It's a different screen than the M9.

They all have 2.5" 230K screens. The M9-P has sapphire glass, but other than that I'm pretty sure they are the same. I don't see a reason why Leica would start using screens with the same specs from different manufacturers. If they switched screens from the M8 to the M9 why wouldn't they have upgraded the screen?

Different electronics and different maker. If only it was that easy. The cover glass be it sapphire or gorilla glass is not part of the LCD mechanism.

..it is as JDLaing says; hence the buzz of all those M8's without working rear LCDs because the supplier went out of business and Leica can no longer source replacements; whatever they might have left is all that there will be. As the M8 & its ur-sensor starts failing in greater numbers, many handsome paperweights will appear on eBay as such.

Nice movie prop or decorator/display item for decades to come.

You're still missing the point. If Leica switched the makers of the LCD from the M8 to the M9 then WHY wouldn't they have used a higher resolution screen? Why would they source a brand new screen from a different maker, but not use a better resolution LCD? They were definitely available and cost isn't a factor.

It doesn't make sense that they upgraded everything on the camera, but when they designed the M9 they said "hey, we need a new LCD supplier, but let's have them make the NEW camera with the same specs as the OLD camera!"

The more likely scenario is that they had a surplus of the crappy LCD screens and wanted to use them up, hence giving the new M9 a crappy M8 screen.

Exactly the point.

To illustrate this abject callousness, the MM (or M9M) was introduced at $8k years after the M9 and still sported the same crappy LCD, without any of the quirks of the M9 resolved. They...don't...care...because...they get away with it and the old crap is already amortized.
