I am impressed with Leica Camera AG's decision to bring this camera to market. It strikes me as a pretty gutsy move, and I hope it pays off for them. I'll be very interested to read comments and reviews on it.

But it still falls a bit short on couple of things. 1st though it's nostalgic, going back to brass was a bad idea. They just lost the weight savings over M262 they gained by dropping extra bits&parts. Aluminium top like M262 would have been the right way to go. And 2nd now that screen etc are gone, they should have made it film M size.

Small details but would have made a world of difference.

"The poor man's M60." :D

I agree regarding the weight savings. However, somewhere I got the impression that the body dimensions are - at least in part - a function of the optical/sensor requirements. Maybe I misunderstood.

And yes, "poor man's M60" sure is a contradiction in terms! ;)

Unfortunately, the flange to sensor distance required likely precludes making the body any thinner, despite the lack of LCD.

Have you guys seen the Pro Leica M-D (Type 262) Conversion Kit yet?! Whoa.

The conversion kit demonstrates that Leica remains true to the design concept that form follows function.

A contrarian view: would have been more impressed with a better EVF and chipset in the M262 than this stunt--the one thing I don't miss about film was wondering whether I captured what I wanted, especially using an UWA lens.

better internals are reserved for next M which is due in the autumn.

As for the thickness, isn't sensor to lens pretty much as the film to lens distance was? Film is thinner, but you had the pressure plates etc behind it.. electronics can be placed just about anywhere.

I tend to think when there's a will, there's a way. I reckon this is more Leica's marketing decisions as it might have turned business away from M240 or M-P typ 240 by making M-D thinner.

All the more's the shame because we're not talking about a $1500 DSLR body. Betting that buyers will dish out $8k every 24-36 months is a dangerous, perhaps unsustainable paradigm.

Look at the 50 APO; it started life at $7900, peaked at nearly $8200 and has now settled below US$6k if you know where to look. I've seen 2nd hand samples flirt with $5k.
Same goes for the M240; the price collapse has been nothing short of breathtaking. If it were so great, this might not be happening. Selling non-state of the art bodies on day 1 and gimmicking them out to extend the longevity horizon, all the while expecting top dollar won't fly as in the M9 days. There are more options today. The free market finds the real value of things, as it did for the 50 APO.

Personally, I hope their next M offers an M with whistles along with a minimalist M262-like version while offering some electronics upgrade along the way. And like the SL, top-flight EVF components.
