I have an MP but need a "cheap" alternative body. I am thinking the M6/M6 TTL are probably my best options as I want/need the meter in camera. Is there any recommendation when buying a used M6, like avoiding some years or earlier model or else?

If you want the meter, an M5 or later is your only choice. M5 prices have been on the rise lately, but still a good option (if you care for it). As for the M6/M6 TTL that would be my suggestion. Unless you need aperture priority, the M7 will command a premium.

As for what to look out for... Same as any Leica, really. One can say, "don't judge a book by its cover" but... Look for one that's in decent shape. A recent CLA doesn't hurt - provided it was done by a reputable individual. A bargain can sometimes be had if you go for a body needing attention and send it to Don, Sherry or Youxin (for example) yourself, provided it doesn't need extensive work.

Things to look out for on any of them would be light leaks, shutter curtain pinholes, sluggish (slow) shutter speeds and perhaps corroded battery compartments.

Personally, I prefer the TTL models for a couple of reasons, and later (newer) cameras are less likely (though not necessarily) needy of a CLA.

Other than that, not much to really be concerned about.

Open the back. Take the body cap off. Hold it up to a bright light source and look at the shutter. Also check the shutter for wrinkles and any signs of wear. Check the seal gaskets at the back where it contacts the camera body.

The meter can get out of whack but that also can be corrected with a CLA.

I love my M6 TTL.

Oh, one thing to keep an eye out for also... Look at the top plate carefully for little pimples. Apparently a reaction between the zinc and paint causes blisters that can get pretty whacky after a while. It looks like this:

I think that is a designed texture to help grip the camera?
