experience to date with colour has been film where the final finish is determined by what's on the box - Kodachrome, Velvia 50, T64 etc.. now shooting digital with DNG files and Lightroom software is a total choice overload. not being one to read manuals and study tutorials, i've been 'learning' on the fly and am both amazed and paralysed at the amount of colour image manipulation available.

this is one image that, to me, is more appropriate to be shown in colour.

is is too over the top in terms of shadow detail, reduced luminance and saturation?
plus any comments, critique, tips/tricks on lighting, general composition and subject matter would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance!

Actually, I think that's a lovely, well-done photo!

From a technical standpoint, the highlights are well under control, the detail in a lot of the shadow area nice but not overdone. The subdued colors add to the mood.

You're so right though; with digital PP there are just soooo many combinations or "recipes" that one could use. It can get quite overwhelming, absolutely. With wet printing it was a lot more involved and the effects more limited so choices were easier (or at least more time consuming).

Just curious - have you tried desaturating the on/off switch on the lathe?

Hi,
Personally I think that you are over thinking the process here.
The first pic is great, excellent exposure, nice detail in highlights as well as in the shadows, good composition, what's there not to like!
