Eli Reed gave a talk with projected images from his new book "A Long Walk Home" in the upstairs gallery at Leica Store LA from 10:00 am to 12 noon on Sunday, June 21, 2015. The Leica staff served coffee, cold water and cookies. The talk accompanied the Leica Gallery's showing of prints from Eli's book.
If you have never heard Eli speak, you should grab the opportunity to do so. He's very articulate, very observant, and has a wide range of experience and wide-ranging intellect. There was a Q&A period at the conclusion of his presentation, and he generously and candidly answered the many questions raised by the audience. What I found particularly fine is his very humanistic approach, both to photography and to people in general. He seems to operate in several dimensions at once: the here and now, as well as the past and the future. He's aware of this propensity to keep open to several "views" at once, and he says its an integral part of his work. He encouraged the audience to be keenly aware and open to what's going on around them, to probe deeply, and to get to know their subjects and have a genuine interest in them, as means to improve their image-making.
Eli was kept busy personalizing copies of his book until the store ran out. It really is a "must have" book.
