For those of you into such things, the new Canon 5D Mark III will be announced tomorrow.

Admittedly, I'm watching this one closely. I'm rocking an ancient 1D Mark IIn that I just haven't felt worth upgrading, given Canon's bodies these last years. The 1D Mark IV just hasn't materialized and the 1Dx doesn't quite do it for me.

What I've wanted is something closer to the 1v-HS, digital. That is, a pro camera with the form factor of a smaller body with its unique grip design. One that doesn't creak and flex with big lenses... Doesn't look like the new 5D3 will tick all the checkboxes - but it does seem Canon has learned from their mistakes. Namely, a real AF system and better exposure matrix, etc.

I might just jump on this bad boy, as I haven't used my Canon gear much since getting back into RFs, waiting forever for Canon to get their sh*t together. If this body doesn't ring my bells though, I just might have a Canon L lens fire sale soon.

Well, it's official! The leaked specs were pretty much spot-on.

While it's a very solid update to the 5D - I dare say "the 5D has grown up" - I'm not overly impressed with the IQ, at least so far. With the focus on video and high-ISO the images certainly lack the detail and sharpness that we're used to with the M8/M9, as the AA filter and NR seem to really kill that aspect. Though it's too early to tell from the samples (in-camera JPEGs) provided, they look pretty soft - especially at high-ISO where the NR kicks in.

Otherwise, the camera is very nice. Better AF, better exposure, faster, more pro-level features - and if video is your thing, even more so. It's supposedly also more "solid feeling" which is another good thing over the previous models and the dual-card CF/SD system is nice. SD cards are easier to find, can be used directly in many laptops and of course, can be shared with the M8/M9 for the most part. Overall, most criticisms of the 5D/5D Mark II appear to have been addressed in the Mark III.

I'm keeping an eye on it and will wait until they're out in the wild and some real user feedback comes out though. For now, I'm giving this one a "meh."
