Next time you have your M9 (or variant) in-hand, try this little trick.

- Pop up the INFO screen; note the lens setting (assuming AUTO in MENU)
- Moving the lever towards the lens, assuming you can, should change or nullify that coding
- Moving the lever away from the lens, assuming you can, will do nothing

The point being, say you wanted to turn off vignetting/coloring corrections for a shot. You can push the lever in towards the lens for that shot and do just that... Sort of. The code will either change to a different lens or show "uncoded" completely. So YMMV by a country mile.

Now the caveats. It depends on your lens completely. What framelines the mount flange brings up and what it's coded as. What the camera switches to is mostly beyond your control and it may not work or be ideal. But it's a fun experiment just the same and you never know - it might work with your favorite lens.

This will not work with the M-E or M, which lack the frame preview lever. It should work on the M8 (and variants) but since there's no INFO screen you'll have to do more labor-intensive testing.

The reason this works is because the camera codes your lens, not just by the 6-bit code on the mount flange but also the framelines brought up... Which can be fooled because of the inherent support for the Tri-Elmar lenses, which change focal length while attached.
