Well, with the prospect of getting an M I decided I'd do some research to find a tele that was: A) optically "worthy" of a modern full frame sensor; B) as light weight and compact as possible; C) has a mechanically adjustable aperture; D) was under $600 for a nice copy...All this led me to the Nikon 300 f/4.

I've not had time to shoot it much around my crowded, centrally located city abode...but the few shots I've take have not disappointed.

So here is the first, using the M and a Kipon adapter wide open at close to minimum focus, edited in LR5:

That's a pretty good spec (300mm f/4) and you can't beat the price. Looks plenty sharp, too. Interesting OOF effect around that one twig...

Honestly I was puzzled by that myself. Initially I thought it was a result of being a bit over zealous with the clarity slider in Lightroom, but it was only at '11'. It might be motion blur as the shot was handheld (I don't have the RRS plate yet) at 1/125th, but its pretty sharp where I focused. Looking at the twig in question, there is a fuzzy texture to it...either way better samples will follow in the next couple months.

Nikon 300mm lenses have always had a good reputation.

Used to own a 300mm f/4.5 ED, although it wasn't called an Apo it was so well corrected it didn't have the usual IR focusing mark.

That's also what I read Dave. From the bit of research I did, the only negative about this lens seemed to be the slow AF (obviously inconsequential with an M)
