Went to my neighborhood Walgreens to pick up a roll of developed film, and when I opened the package I found nothing besides the prints but a disk with some questionable quality scans - and no negatives! When I inquired about this, I was told that Walgreens' current policy is now to send all film to a Fuji factory in South Carolina where they are developed and the negatives promptly destroyed. Digital data is then sent to the local Walgreens store where prints are made from the data. By the time you come to the Walgreens store to pick it up, your negatives have already been destroyed and there is no way to retrieve them.

BTW, no one informs the customer of this when handing the film in to Walgreens. There is a poster in the photo department that claims that film development is available but it does not state that the negatives will be destroyed. The person behind the counter claims that when you hand in the film, if you examine very carefully the Fine Print in the paper agreement, it says somewhere that the negatives will be destroyed. But who reads these microscopic contracts when handing in film? So I'm posting this just to let the general film using population know about this egregious activity.

Even as a digital shooter, that makes my speechless. First of all, the negatives are not their property! Second, they're sestroying originals and providing back a digital lower resolution copy... who the hell came up with such a idiotic idea?

I'm sure there's already enough grounds to drag them to court for destruction of property and ask for serious cash for destroying unique materials.

Depending on the facts and the law of the particular jurisdiction, there might be too little monetary value associated with the film negatives to warrant an individual bringing suit. However, if many customers had the same thing happen, there might be a basis for a class action. You should consult an attorney who practices that type of law in your jurisdiction, to be properly advised on something like this.

Wow. That's a bit of a bugger (to say the least). You could hardly believe a film lab would consider destroying the most important item of the whole process. Who are these people?

I just checked my photo envelope from Boots the Chemists (UK) and all is well.

Obviously not become a pandemic yet.

I guess that you won't be using them again?

Yeah, decent lawyer could answer that.. but in theory, I'd think they can't rule it out from individuals. Who says the photographer in question isn't the next HCB and his photo would have sold by the millions printed?

It's unlikely, but can the court rule it out as option by default? I would certainly hope they don't..

The first thing I think of is, "who the hell develops film at WALGREEN'S?!?"

I don't even want to get into the the myriad of reasons that it's a bad idea.

Secondly, I'd like more solid proof that this is a nationwide policy and not a singe store's practice.

Their latest ad for film processing doesn't mention the mandatory instant destruction of your film before you even get a chance to see the negatives.
The sign over the photo counter said "We process your film!", not "We process and destroy your film!"
We hand in unprocessed film; and for a fee, we expect to receive back processed film (up to now, I guess).

No wording on the coupon, but the pictures seem to illustrate the disposable camera and film and the arrow pointing to the end result. (No negs)

Actually the film on the left is already developed positive image but I guess that's 'for illustration only'.

I see that some stores dev film on - site. You'll probably get our negs back at those?

Too risky for me. Hopefully it won't happen on this side of the pond.
