Setting the new benchmark for 50mm lenses is Leica's brand new APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH

List price is looking like $7,195 USD and will be available in August.

P.S. Don't lose that lens cap - it's $125 to replace!

Well now that it is officially the second most expensive Leica lens, it is now officially out of sight and mind (at least for me). I thought the originally rumored price of $3500ish was pushing it, but at twice that...

Kind of makes the Noctilux seem a bit cheaper now, eh? :D

It's interesting to note that Peter Karbe himself says you'll need the MM to see the full potential of this lens... Which more or less implies that M9/M9-P shooters won't benefit as much. However, the corners and edges should be just as good as the center now - and seriously pushing the limits of the sensors. Some remark that the images it produces are on par with medium format (e.g. S2).

If the M10 is "all that and sliced bread" it should make an insane combo with this lens... And likely very pricey. But if it offers you MF quality in a true 35mm format...

There's actually more truth to that than you might realize... This new Summicron has been in the works over at Leica for quite a while - but was shelved because the price couldn't be justified. Film just wasn't that good and digital wasn't around yet. Fast forward to today where you have sensors like the MM and M9/M9-P and it makes a lot more sense.

Stands to reason the Summicron would be the benchmark lens (as it generally has been)... It's easy enough to make a good lens but a lot more difficult to make a great one. Take one big variable; speed - out of the equation and things get easier. Leica's been re-inventing a lot of their lenses with ASPH, APO, FLE and other tricks/technology. Expensive, but as good as it gets. The MTF charts at optimal apertures are essentially flatlines! Quite impressive.

They're shipping! Though it remains to be seen as to what quantity...

The first people are getting their lenses via the dealer.

Some choice quotes regarding the lens:

Ming Thein wrote:
It is clear that this lens is capable of resolving beyond the definition of the M9 and MM sensors...

Peter Karbe wrote:
The lens will of course only reach peak performance in conjunction with the M9 Monochrom because it has the resolution and the entire imaging chain is so lossless that it’s only then that the performance of the lens comes across.

Erwin Puts wrote:
The performance of the lens is flawless. For what it is worth, the ASCR at full aperture (f/2) is able to resolve 160 linepairs/mm on microfilm, developed in Spur chemicals. The lens therefore has a large quality margin for use with the M8/9/M-E/Mono with the 6.8 microns pixel size (70 lp/mm) and the M with 6 microns pixel size (80 linepairs/mm).
