Dear Shetland:
I did get the 12504, and you are absolutely right: it looks very cool (besides attaching firmly to the lens). 8-)

Dear Warren:
Just to be clear, you just sent your lens hood to New Jersey, without the lens, correct? I might try that, since the plastic hood is just sitting in a drawer and I won't miss it. You're right...it is pretty cheesy, although the idea of a rectangular lens hood, configured to match the proportions of the frame, makes sense.

Jim,
Actually, I sent the lens and the hood to New Jersey. I wasn't sure it was the hood or the lens where it attached. I tried the metal hood that came with my 50 v.3 and it fit just fine. I can't remember exactly what they told me they did, but I seem to recall that they did something to the front of the lens where the hood prongs should sit firmly. Drag being without the lens, especially since I had just bought it.

Warren, thanks very much for the additional information. I'll have to give some more thought to sending both the hood and the 35mm lens to NJ. Glad to know it worked out OK.

Well, it took me long enough, but I finally followed Warren's advice and sent my 35mm Summicron-M into Leica Service in New Jersey. I brought the lens and lens hood into the Leica Store LA and they sent it to New Jersey for me. I got an email a few days later confirming that the repair would be made at no charge.
