I find myself taking advantage of the opportunities presented when classic photography books are reprinted. Modern reprints are often edited or supervised by the photographer, printed to high standards, well-bound, and supplemented with additional images. I have purchased classic photobooks in their original editions, occasionally paying more than I would have liked for a copy in less than fine condition. I do not seek these books for their perfection as pristine collector's items; rather, I enjoy and use them for the instruction and inspiration they offer. Prince Street Girls is a 2017 re-issue of the early classic by Susan Meiselas. It is published in a limited edition of 1000 as part of TBW Books Subscription Series No. 5. I purchased a signed copy directly from Magnum Photos in New York. It is in hardcover, printed in Italy from excellent black & white scans. From 1976 through 1979 Ms. Meiselas followed the day-to-day activities of eleven girls living in the Mott Street neighborhood of New York. She gained their trust and friendship, enabling her to capture their relationships as they grew from adolescence to teenage. It is a moving record, and a great example of a long-term photographic project. As is usual with Ms. Meiselas, the friendships she formed in the making of this work have endured where circumstances permit, and her interest in the subjects' evolution into grown women continued long after the first edition was published. This is an inspiring and fine book, and I strongly recommend it.
