I recently decided to reprocess some old RAW files, mostly as a goof - and to see how things have changed since the earlier years as far as Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop go - as well as my own workflow.

This was in response to seeing my older Canon shots and saying, "wow, the M9 is soooo much better" in terms of saturation, contrast, etc. My default shooter back in 2007 was the Canon 1D Mark IIn and 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM lens - an 8.2MP camera with a 1.3x crop and a zoom lens and what was used below. So spec-wise, the M9 sure is better. Plus the prime lenses, etc.

Then, as now - I shoot RAW/DNG and go for a flat response (no contrast, saturation, sharpness or other twiddling in-camera) as I prefer to to it during import. So this would be a good comparison of "how I used to do it" and "how I do it now" as well. I think the two photos speak for themselves! The red channel is a little hot (but not blown). But you can actually SEE that it's a sunny day in the re-process.

The biggest difference is lens profiles (with correction) and more aggressive use of contrast through the use of a Camera Profile in ACR (Adobe Standard rather than Camera Neutral) plus a custom, slight S curve. Sharpening is also no longer Unsharp Mask but rather Smart Sharpen, albeit at similar settings.

Interesting differences. I look forward to the M9 'version'

I've recently switched to Lightroom (LR) from Aperture since LR came with my Leica M-E purchase. I have yet to merge my older Aperture library to my new LR workflow. So I'm sure I will see some major changes to how my older files are rendered.

BTW, this past week I purchased George Jardine's Lightroom Library Workflow and Develop Module videos. I've completed the Library workflow and can say it was an eye opener and now have confidence once I've finished moving my older files over I will be able find any photo from the past.

I did a quick blog entry here:
