I've been developing my own film for going on nearly 30 years now. In all that time, I've used one wetting agent more than any other (and still do today). No, not the default Kodak PhotoFlo... For one, you have to mix up a working solution ahead of time and secondly, it has been known to leave deposits on tanks and (especially) reels. Bah!

Next time you're stocking up on supplies, check out LFN Wetting Agent which is made by Edwal. Freestyle Photo carries it, as do many others. It comes in small bottles (which last forever). Why?

The beauty of LFN is that you only need a single drop in your final rinse! Open up your tank if you haven't done so already at this point, dispense a drop and fill with cold water. Give it a very casual slosh (so as not to create bubbles) for 30 seconds and you're done! Nothing to mix up, nothing to store - and no deposits.

Good stuff, this:

Hrm, how does this play into what I am using now though?

Here's what I'm doing:

XTOL 1:1
Water 'stop bath'
Ilford Rapid Fixer 1:4
Water rinse x 2
Rinse under faucet for ~10 minutes
Put a few drops of the Arista "photo flo" and let sit for a minute

I know I didn't use any hypo clear or a "wetting agent", but isn't the photo flo considered that?

Hypo clear (e.g. Perma Wash) would cut your wash time down to five minutes - but you're right, PhotoFlo and LFN are both "wetting agents" meant to make water run off the film without leaving spots.
