New MS-Optical Perar 21mm f/4.5 Lens

MS-Optical has done it again, and introduced their latest creation, the MS-Optical Perar 21mm f/4.5. If you're not aware, these are hand built "ultra pancake" lenses from Japan by a fellow named Miyazaki. Don't let their super small size fool you; the optical performance is generally very good, as is the quality of the build (though there have been some cute engraving errors in the past). They're quirky, and a bit pricey - but absolutely unique. You can pick one up here for ¥85,000 ($710 USD).

The specifications of the lens:

  • Native Leica M mount
  • Ultra compact and lightweight, only 45grams (55 grams with the hood)
  • Triplet design with 3 elements in 3 groups for refined sharpness
  • Premium multicoated lens with a 95% light transmission rate
  • 10 blade aperture diaphragm with smooth selection for a clean bokeh effect
  • Minimum focal distance of 0.8m to 1.0m (each lens is a little different due to being handmade). Mirrorless cameras are 0.5-0.6m min focus
  • Unique exposed front aperture element
  • Ultra flat pancake design. This lens is the same size as a body cap at 5.2mm
  • The lens comes with a hard screw-on hood, which doubles as protection for the front element. The hood accepts a 19mm filter.
