Leica Opens Boston Store and Gallery, Bringing Innovative German Optics Brand to Artistic Community

Store and gallery opening kicks off with “Looking Back” exhibition by renowned Bostonian Magnum photographer Constantine Manos and several free workshops and events

September 6, 2016— Leica Camera is proud to announce the opening of the first-ever Boston Leica Store and Gallery, offering New England residents access to the German optics manufacturer’s line of high-end products and expert staff, as well as a rotation of curated exhibits on display. Located in the recently renovated Park Plaza Hotel and boasting over 3,000 square feet of space, the Leica Store and Gallery Boston will open its doors on September 16th.

The Leica Store Boston will showcase a full line-up of Leica cameras, lenses and sport optics for new customers, Leica enthusiasts and professional photographers alike to test and explore at their leisure. As a brand committed to photographic art and education, the Leica Store Boston will also offer an expert staff to provide visitors with in-depth advice, product demonstrations, tips and recommendations. Finally, the new Store and Gallery will feature the immensely popular Leica Akademie workshops to round out the one-of-a-kind, immersive customer experience. Beginning opening weekend, the Store and Gallery will host classes, walking tours and workshops for the photographic community to hone their craft.

Boston’s Leica Gallery will curate exhibits of work by world-famous photographers and host special engagements with featured artists. To celebrate the opening, the Leica Gallery Boston (one of only two Leica Galleries nationwide) will debut a special exhibit by award-winning Magnum photographer Constantine Manos. The debut exhibit includes several unpublished photographs from the start of Manos’ career and will remain open to the public until November 1st.

An American photographer of Greek heritage, Constantine “Costa” Manos was hired at the age of nineteen as the official photographer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at its summer festival at Tanglewood. After living in Greece for two years he moved to Provincetown in 1963, publishing photography books about Boston and Greece for Time-Life and contributing to Magnum Photos. In 1974, Manos was hired to create the photographs for "Where's Boston?" a large exhibition in honor of the city of Boston's 200th anniversary. The photos were later featured in the book Bostonians: Photographs from Where's Boston?

“Boston is a historic city and travel destination with deep roots in culture, education and photography – a place that renowned photographers like Constantine call home – so we are thrilled to finally open our doors to this city and creative community and provide local Boston photographers, creatives, students and tourists with the tools they need to capture amazing moments,” says Roland Wolff, VP of Marketing and Corporate Retail of Leica Camera. “Given Constantine’s connection to Boston we are honored to have him join us for the opening event and unveil his exhibit at the Leica Gallery – sharing never-before-seen photos from a lifetime of beautiful photography – with the city he has called home for many years.”
