Details on the Refreshed Summarit Lenses

During our leading coverage of Leica at Photokina 2014, one of the great new products we posted about were the new generation of Summarit-M Lenses. In a La Vida Leica exclusive, we had a chance to talk with Stefan Daniel and Jesko Oeynhausen of Leica Camera AG to clarify a few things about them - as many people had asked us for details.

We apologize for not posting this earlier - we've actually had this conversation over a week ago, but have been too busy to post it sooner.

First and foremost, the lenses are based on the same, original optical design of their predecessors. However, through tighter production tolerances (mechanical build basically), Leica was able to realize the improvement in brightness from f/2.5 to the new f/2.4 rating. Another source of confusion is the ASPH (aspherical) rating of the new Summarit-M 35mm f/2.4 ASPH lens. Did Leica change an element within the new lens to bring this about? No, the original had an ASPH element all along - it just wasn't part of the official name as it now is. So this is what's mostly the same between the old and new lenses.

Let's talk about what is really new - and perhaps the best new feature of this new generation of Summarit lenses. The minimum close-focusing distance has been improved on a couple of them, and this was accomplished with a different mechanical construction from the original lenses (which also resulted in the aforementioned f/2.4 improvement). First is the 75mm lens, which now focuses down to .7m (down from .9m). Second is the 90mm, which now focuses down to .9m (down from 1m). A shame that the 35mm and 50mm remain unchanged at .8m - we wish these received some love, and focused down to the minimum of .7m.

Lastly, all Summarit-M lenses now come complete with a lens hood - which previously, they did not.

The 75mm and 90mm are available in Leica Stores, Boutiques and dealers as of September. The 35mm and 50 mm lenses will be available in October. You can (pre)-order here:
