(Leica) Stores Competing with eCommerce

The Miami Herald is reporting on how "South Florida camera stores refocus to compete with e-commerce" including one we're all familiar with, and one of our sponsors - Leica Store Miami. It goes on to say how owner David Farkas has turned to special events to bring in customers. Though this is a strategy of all Leica stores and boutiques, really... They host regular meetings of camera enthusiasts, offer photography instruction and use their gallery space to showcase photography. Clearly the strategy is working, as Leica Store Miami attracted over three dozen customers to a recent event featuring nature photographer Paul Marcellini. Read more below!

Leica Store San Francisco to Open

A La Vida Leica exclusive (which Leica Rumors copied and reposted without credit). You may have heard of Camera West (they're one of our sponsors). They currently run two rather successful Leica boutiques, located in Rancho Mirage and Walnut Creek, CA. Turns out, they're working with Leica Camera to open a full-on Leica Store in San Francisco. We don't know the exact location yet, but we do know it's in a prime area and the space is gorgeous. Depending on construction, the opening is tentatively set for late June or early July. We reached out to Camera West, who had no comment. Read more below for updates!

First Leica Pop-up Store in Netherlands

Transcontinenta, the Leica importer for the Netherlands - is opening the country's first "pop-up store" (recall the one in the Burlington Arcade, London). It's located in a great area of one of our favorite cities - the Jordaan district in Amsterdam. This new Leica Pop-up store will be located at Eerste Boomdwaarsstraat 10. It will be (temporarily) open from June 10 through 30, 2014 from 10am to 6pm. More info in this post (in English) by Leica Netherlands. Let's hope that, like Burlington Arcade - it might stay permanently.

Calumet Photo Will Rise Again

Recall when we published news that Calumet Photo vanished in the U.S. Well, it seems that Calumet may rise from the ashes like a phoenix. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that "Calumet Photographic Sold to C&A Marketing" who paid $3.125 million in cash for the Calumet assets, including inventory. C&A Marketing is a bit of a scavenger; having won the right to make Polaroid-branded video cameras, accessories and other products after the 2008 bankruptcy filing. And in 2012, C&A Marketing acquired certain Ritz Camera stores and the company’s RitzPix online imaging business out of Ritz’s second bankruptcy filing. They're currently evaluating which stores to reopen and their “first priority” will be to rehire former Calumet employees. No word on when, but keep an eye out for developments. Another Break-in and Theft in London

Just a few months ago in October, we brought news of a break-in and Theft at Leica Store Mayfair - well, it seems the crackheads in London have struck again. This time at Red Dot Cameras. The break-in occurred during the night on April 24, 2014 and as a result, is closed today. Head on over to their website for a list of the stolen goods... Which consist of primarily lenses - a lot of lenses - and some cameras. The lenses include mostly Summarit but also quite a few big ticket Summilux and Noctilux lenses. Total worth is about $62k USD.
