Hi-res iMac and Displays Coming this Fall

Of interest to our Mac-using friends, which the majority are - might find this news interesting. The discovery of a Retina-equipped iMac referenced in an OS X 10.10 Yosemite file (French) (in English via Google) follows the recent news of OS X 10.9.3, which Cupertino released last month, adding “true” Retina display support for external 4K monitors. While 4K monitors exist on the market, short of the really expensive ones - they're not all that good (yet). That may soon change however, as Intel, display makers join forces to introduce $400 4K monitors by year's end. Stands to reason that besides a new iMac, a new Apple Thunderbolt Display is also in the works - which would complement the Mac Pro (designed with video editing in mind). Read more details below.

New M Monochrom (Type 230) Coming?

Digicame-info is reporting that Leica has registered a new camera called the M Monochrom (Typ 230) with the radio government agency of Korea RRA (Korea Radio Research Laboratory). This would mean that the new M Monochrom camera will have built-in Wi-Fi capabilities and will be announced at Photokina in September, most likely. Best guess - it'll be based on the current Leica M (CMOS) sensor. Interesting timing, considering that Leica included the current M Monochrom in the Leica M Edition 100 and just announced the availability of a silver chrome version alongside the regular black chrome as well as a Leitz Park special edition, available only at the Leica Store in Wetzlar. Of course, this typically means one thing - a new version is all but certain... But when? Read more below for an update!

APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH Leaked?

In some of the press materials surrounding the introduction of the new Leica T (Type 701), there's one shot of the T amongst many M lenses, showing compatibility through the use of the M-Adapter T. What's interesting to note is the 35mm lens pictured... It's not the current Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH lens we all know and love! Rather, it appears to be a new version - leaked by Leica themselves. Later versions of this image show the current lens. We suspect this long-awaited update might be a new APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH lens!

New Leica M Firmware Due Soon

The last firmware update for the Leica M (Type 240) was v2.0.0.12 released in December, 2013 and that was mostly an "internal" update, with no visible end-user changes. There's been talk for some time now that changes to the behavior of Auto-ISO were set to drop but we have yet to see that materialize. There are now some fresh rumblings of a firmware update coming, promising more "feature requests." The timing could be interesting with a Leica special event looming on April 24th... Perhaps May 24th (how apropos). What else might we expect? Maybe a new EVF... Read more below for updated details!

4K Leica S-System at Photokina?

Our friend Dez gives us a tip that the expected Leica S update at Photokina might also include 4K video capability. We already expected the 40-50MP resolution bump in the move to a CMOS sensor... So adding live view and video capabilities makes a lot of sense, and nice to see that Leica is going for 4K right out of the gate. The real question lies in the lenses... Read more below.
