better internals are reserved for next M which is due in the autumn.
All the more's the shame because we're not talking about a $1500 DSLR body. Betting that buyers will dish out $8k every 24-36 months is a dangerous, perhaps unsustainable paradigm.
Look at the 50 APO; it started life at $7900, peaked at nearly $8200 and has now settled below US$6k
if you know where to look. I've seen 2nd hand samples flirt with $5k.
Same goes for the M240; the price collapse has been nothing short of breathtaking. If it were so great, this might not be happening. Selling non-state of the art bodies on day 1 and gimmicking them out to extend the longevity horizon, all the while expecting top dollar won't fly as in the M9 days. There are more options today. The free market finds the real value of things, as it did for the 50 APO.
Personally, I hope their next M offers an M with whistles
along with a minimalist M262-like version while offering some electronics upgrade along the way. And like the SL, top-flight EVF components.
