Some do feel a bit... Lousy. You could describe it as "crunchy" or "notchy" or just imprecise. More so in the M9 than the M8 it seems, but they can be improved however.

Ideally you would want to take it apart and polish up some rough spots, adding a bit of better lubrication. Or just wait until things wear in... I cheated a bit and did something in between. I blew out in/around the shutter release to clear out any grit, dust, etc. that might be in there. Then I applied a tiny, tiny drop of lubricant around the circumference. Finally, I worked the release repeatedly (did it while watching TV) with it both upright and upside down, occasionally wiping any lubricant that escaped off. It's much improved now.

If it's really bad of course, send it in to Leica.

We know the release is different in the M-E and MM... So I'd think the M will be different as well. Hopefully all better? If someone could add their experiences with these it would be great to see if they actually are.
