If you're a fan of Leica, chances are you're a fan of other traditional, "mechanical" things... Like fountain pens. Any other fountain pen fans out there?

I like several brands but far and away my biggest source of joy are those from Pelikan. I've got almost a dozen of them alone, including the Wonders of Nature series (all but Eternal Ice), an M405, an M605 and lastly a vintage (1950-1954) 400.

If you're curious, the Wonders of Nature LE pens look like this:

Niagara Falls, 2007

Sahara, 2007

Polar Lights, 2008

Mount Everest, 2008

Yes. I love fountain pens. I have a few brands as well - Montblanc, Lamy, Pilot but like you, I too love my Pelikans the most. I have the Pelikan tradition M200 series in different nibs and colors.

I love my Montblanc. But I must say, those Wonders of Nature LE pens looked great!

I will get around to photographing no e sometime. I have a few Mont Blancs, and some other much less expensive brands. I have used a MB Doue as my daily for over ten years. I am absolutely out of sorts when I accidentally leave it home on occasion.

Clearly a couple of fans! Awesome. :)

I do have a few others; TWSBI, Delta, Aurora, Cross, Danitrio, Rotring... One of my favorites is an old Waterman 3 from the 30s. It's a classic "wet noodle" that's way too much fun to write with. The Delta Titanio is a modern pen, but the titanium nib also has a fair bit of flex. With the right ink (one that shades intensely) it's really amazing.

But yeah, the Pels are my favorites. :)

Funny...I have been thinking of getting a modestly priced fountain pen to force me to recover my lost muscle memory and therefore, ability to write! Any recommendations?

At the lower end, there's a LOT of possibilities. What's your budget range?

Okay, that puts you into the mid-range easily. I might suggest pretty much anything by Pelikan, but depending on the size of your hands and preference - go with the 600 or 800 series. The 200 and 400 are rather small. This price range will give you nice furniture (pen trim, rhodium, etc. plated) and a gold nib. Great writers, excellent materials and perform very well - with a nice ink reservoir (which is a piston, integrated; not a cartridge).

If you're a fan of retractable pens and want something similar in an FP, the Pilot "Vanishing Point" series are very nice. The downside is relatively small ink capacity (if using the refillable cartridge). But they're wonderfully "springy" and soft writing. The come in a ton of colors and finishes (e.g. raden).

If you want something basic and inexpensive to kick the tires, check out TWSBI (on eBay). The company itself has been making pens for others for a long time and a few years ago decided to do their own thing also.

Levenger and Fahrney's are good companies that sell a ton of cool lifestyle/office supplies and fountain pens. I get both their catalogs.
