Just found out the hard way that Portra doesn't capture sunsets very well. Really lost about 8 keepers due to washout of subtle colors.

What about scanning in the negatives and manipulating them digitally?

Didn't work. I couldn't pull the subtle colors out of the clouds and sky using either lr5 or any plugins (topaz or nik). I was using a bessa r4a and 35mm f1.7. I now have a leica m6 classic, mint by the way, and am shooting tri x 400 now. I just ordered 5 rolls of kodak ektar from b&h. I like it better.
