Many members of LVL will be familiar with Gunther Osterloh, through his prior publications on Leica M and R cameras, systems and techniques. In 40 years with Leitz and Leica he worked as a photographic engineer, an editor for LFI, and a director of product management and the Leica Academy. He authored Leica M, the Advanced School of Photography (1978) and its second edition (2011), and Applied Leica Technique: Excellence in Photography (2nd Ed.,1985). His book 50 Years Leica M (2004) is the foundation on which Osterloh's current book is based. In the author's words Leica M 1954 to Today is "[s]lightly revised, but greatly expanded...." Leica Camera's CEO - Dr. Andreas Kaufmann - refers to it in the preface as "Osterloh's M Handbook."

This large-format hardcover volume is written in both german and english, and the bilingual texts and picture captions are arranged to make it as easy as possible to read without having to flip back and forth. German text and captions are printed in bold black, english in dark grey. The 327 pages are heavily illustrated in both black and white and color. The many archival images of Leica facilities and personnel involved in designing and making the various M models in Wetzlar, Solms, Portugal and Canada are supplemented by up-to-date images from the new Leica headquarters in Wetzlar.

The book is organized into five sections:
(1) Analog Leica M Cameras, which includes detailed discussions of the development of the viewfinder, shutter and film advance mechanisms.
(2) Leica M Lenses, with a concise overview of lens aberrations and the efforts of Leitz/Leica designers to overcome and balance them with a subjective view to attaining the highest performance.
(3) The Leica and Leitz Enterprises, with interesting backstories on how various key decisions relating to the M line of cameras and lenses were made.
(4) Leica and Leitz in the Public Eye, with illustrated surveys of Leica in-house employee literature, photo-fair activities, books, Leica training and special "honor" cameras.
(5) The Beginning of a New Era, covering digital M cameras through the Type 262.

Leica M 1954 to Today (2015) is well-written, illustrated and designed, and beautifully printed. Published by Heel Verlag and available through Amazon.
