Do any LVL members have any experience removing/replacing the tall, cylindrical slotted screw located near the back of the hot shoe on digital M cameras? The used M9 I recently purchased is very clean, except that the top of that fastener is slightly nicked. I wonder whether that fastener simply holds down the hot shoe, or performs some other or additional functions inside the rangefinder housing.

It serves two purposes; one is to stop flashes and finders (so they seat properly) and second is to hold down a small pressure plate in the shoe. If the screw were removed, the plate wouldn't fall out or seem loose... For a while. So it's not advised to remove it, rather replace it. You can get them from Leica Service in NJ or DAG for about $5.

Thanks very much. The M9 arrived from Vienna this morning, and the damage to the screw looked worse in the photograph than it does in reality. The Leica Store was very conservative in describing and grading the camera; the condition of the camera exceeded my expectations. It works like a dream.
