It's funny. As I look at my images I've come to realize that I'm very much a straight out of the camera kind of shooter. Oh sure, I maximize dynamic range and recover highlights and shadows a bit, maybe adjust for contrast. The most extensive I get is spot healing and vignetting. I prefer to crop in camera (though sometimes have to do it in post).

On the other hand, there are shooters out there that can't live without their plugins, recipes or what have you. Not that there's anything wrong with that - it's just a different style.

Where do you lie?

My daughter is a U.S. Marshal.
Tweaker is a term they affectionately give a user of crack cocaine.

Not to worry......I knew what you meant.

I R a "tweaker" in the photographic sense though I actually tweak only a percentage of what I keep out of camera.

Oh, I knew what tweaker meant (it also applies to speed/meth). :D

I'm going to start experimenting. I just did a bracket shot with the Distagon 4/18 (1.5 stops between each shot of three) and combined them with Nik Software HDR Efex Pro. Despite the "alignment" and "anti-ghosting" options, it was less than stellar. Clearly it works best with a tripod. Will try with a single file next.

I also have to start playing with digital black and white more. But my feeling has always been, "if you want black and white, shoot film." ;)

I did too until recently. I'm fiddling with black and white every time out now.

For the digital photograph post-processing is much like the darkrooms of the past. Ansel Adams (and many others) took amazing photos, but the real magic came from what he was able to achieve in the darkroom. I don't understand the stigma that is often attached with using photoshop, lightroom or other such instruments. Sometimes I don't touch a photo, other times I go crazy to get it where I want it

Absolutely. Photoshop (or whatever) is the modern/digital equivalent of the darkroom.

I would suggest that the likes of Photoshop etc are more than a digital darkroom, they allow techniques that even very experienced film processor would find hard to achieve and make them very easy to do. Most people seem to get their film developed, scanned and then process it. Who today repaints/retouches original prints or removes whole objects.

I don't know about a stigma but the likes of some of the more notorious world leaders from the past, would have loved it for easily deleting unwanted people from group photos as their affiliations changed!

I think the problem is that some people take it to far. I don't use Photoshop very often as I find it complicated for what I need/what. Like DN, the most I get up to is conversion to B&W and tweaking of exposure, highlights etc. More than that to me is graphic art. Fine if you what it, but for me I like to keep it simple and stick to what comes out of the camera as much as possible.

Boring I know but, I'll stay with Lightroom or Aperture I think.

I try to minimize enhancement of my files - my goal is always to make the final image look like the scene as I remember it - not to "improve" it.

I do my processing in Lightroom, sticking to the basics.
